Notion datasource

The Notion datasource queries a Notion database and makes its rows available to your content, so a page you already maintain in Notion can be shown on screens without copying it anywhere.

Prerequisites

  • A Notion account with access to the database you want to display.
  • The ability to sign in to Notion while creating the credential.

Create the Notion credential

Notion has its own credential type on the Other tab of Cloud Credentials.

  1. Go to Settings > Cloud Credentials and open the Other tab.
  2. Click to add a credential, and choose the Notion card.
  3. Enter a Name, assign Teams if you use them, then save.
  4. In the credential's row, click the Authenticate button. Notion opens: sign in, and give Wallboard access to the pages that hold your database.

If the connection stops working, or you want to share more pages with it, click the credential's Re-authenticate button and go through Notion's sign-in again.

Create the Notion datasource

  1. Go to Settings > Datasources > External datasources and click Add new
  2. On the Choose a datasource type screen, select Notion
  3. Fill in the Notion settings:
    • Credentials — select the Notion credential you created.
    • Datasource — select the Notion database to read. The list shows the databases the credential has access to; if yours is missing, re-authenticate the credential and share that page with Wallboard.
  4. In the Advanced settings panel, set the Refresh interval (seconds) to match how often the Notion content changes. See External Datasources for the full list of advanced and cache settings
  5. Save the datasource using the save icon in the top toolbar

Data structure

The Notion datasource returns a table: one row per entry of the Notion database, and one column per database property, named as in Notion.

  • Text, numbers, checkboxes and dates keep their type. Dates use the start date.
  • Properties with several values — multi-select, people, relations — are joined into one text value, separated by commas. A relation gives the IDs of the related entries, not their names.
  • Files & media properties return the file addresses, so they can feed an image widget.
  • Up to 500 rows are read from a database.

Display the data

Once the datasource is saved, bind it to a widget the same way as any other external datasource — a Table widget for a list of rows, or individual widgets bound to single fields.
