Advanced datasource settings
The Advanced settings panel sits in the middle of the datasource editor and controls how a data source behaves and is managed, rather than how it connects to its source.
Refresh scheduling and caching have their own page — see Refresh and caching.
Datasource Assignment Settings
Teams
In the Team management modal you can assign teams to manage and see the datasource.
This option is only available if the customer has at least one team available.
Datasource Activation Management
Active
The Active switch, in the datasource editor's settings (the icon in the header), turns the datasource on or off without deleting its configuration.
Prevent auto-deactivation
By default, Wallboard automatically deactivates data sources that have not been used by any device for an extended period (see Auto-deactivation for the exact trigger). Enable the Prevent auto-deactivation toggle to keep the data source active regardless of inactivity — useful for seasonal, on-call, or critical data sources that should always be ready even when not currently played.
This toggle only disables usage-based deactivation. To also prevent error-based deactivation (25 consecutive refresh failures), enable Continue refreshing despite errors as well.
Continue refreshing despite errors
This switch sits under Refresh settings. When enabled, the datasource keeps refreshing even if errors occur. This prevents error-based deactivation, which otherwise disables a data source after 25 consecutive refresh failures.
Connection settings
The Connection settings button opens the request options:
- Request method: GET, POST, PUT or PATCH.
- Authentication (Basic auth): turn on Requires username and password, then enter the Username and Password.
- Data to send: the request body. Turn on Send as JSON format for JSON (most modern APIs), and enter the body in Data content. A GET request sends no body.
- Custom headers (advanced): key and value pairs added to every request, for example an API key (
X-API-Key) or a token (Authorization: Bearer <token>).
Datasource Manipulation Settings
Editable from display
This feature allows users to update or input data directly from the display device, enabling real-time interaction and manual triggering of data source actions.
- It's especially useful for collecting information from individuals interacting with the content.
- Recommended for self-kiosk contents, surveys or even showcases with source changing datasource actions
Transformations — Process and filter data
Process and filter data applies filters, modifications or processing steps to the data after it is fetched — to extract specific fields, filter results, or reshape the data before it is displayed. Use Add another process and filter step to chain several; they run in order, from top to bottom.
Run condition — When to apply
- Every update (always): the step runs each time the datasource updates.
- Only when data is different: the step runs only when the source data has changed.
Shuffle lists (randomize arrays)
Randomizes the order of items in a list. Which arrays to randomize takes a JSONata selector naming the array — for example .items or .data.products — and more than one can be given. The data is then randomized automatically wherever the datasource is used.
Filter and select data (query JSON)
Transforms the data with a query. Data filter/query accepts JSONata or similar syntax to select, filter or modify fields — for example $.items[].name extracts every name field from an items array.
The query field can write itself: select Generate the query with AI. The datasource must already hold data — with none, the option reads Add data to the datasource first to generate a query with AI.
