Status Indicator Dots on Screen

As of October 25, 2024, we have introduced an updated visual indicator system that replaces the previous "Oops" message with a more intuitive dot-based status display on the screen.

  • This change is part of our ongoing effort to improve transparency and troubleshooting capabilities for device and content status.

What are Status Indicator Dots?

The status indicator dots appear in the bottom-right corner of your display screen when the system encounters loading or connectivity issues. These three dots use a combination of white and red colors to communicate different states, helping technicians quickly diagnose problems without needing to access device logs.

Understanding the Dot Patterns

Three Red Dots

Meaning: Server-side issue or complete connection failure

  • The device cannot reach the Wallboard server
  • Unable to retrieve necessary resources or content
  • Network connectivity may be completely lost

Common Causes:

  • Internet connection failure
  • Server maintenance or outage
  • Firewall blocking connection
  • DNS resolution issues

Resolution Steps:

  1. Check internet connectivity on the device
  2. Verify server status at status.wallboard.com
  3. Check firewall settings
  4. Restart the device if problem persists

One White Dot and Two Red Dots

Meaning: Loading issue with partial connectivity

  • Initial connection established but content retrieval failed
  • Temporary content loading delay
  • System will automatically retry after 5 minutes

Common Causes:

  • Slow network connection
  • Large content files taking time to download
  • Partial server response
  • Content corruption during transfer

Resolution Steps:

  1. Wait 5 minutes for automatic retry
  2. Check network bandwidth availability
  3. Verify content size isn't exceeding limits
  4. Clear device cache if issue persists

Two White Dots and One Red Dot

Meaning: Content processing or rendering issue

  • Content successfully downloaded but cannot be displayed
  • JavaScript execution errors
  • Resource loading failures

Common Causes:

  • Invalid content format
  • Missing dependencies or resources
  • Browser compatibility issues
  • Memory constraints on device

Resolution Steps:

  1. Check content validity in the editor
  2. Verify all resources are properly uploaded
  3. Test content on a different device
  4. Review device specifications and memory usage

Blinking Animation

The dots use a blinking animation (5-second cycle) to:

  • Attract attention to the issue
  • Indicate the system is still responsive
  • Differentiate from static screen content

Auto-Recovery Behavior

The system includes automatic recovery mechanisms:

  1. 5-Minute Retry Cycle

    • For loading issues (one white, two red dots)
    • Automatically attempts to reload content
    • No manual intervention required
  2. 10-Minute Full Reload

    • For persistent errors
    • Complete page refresh attempted
    • Clears temporary cache issues

Additional Visual Indicators

Fixed Pixel Grid

In addition to the status dots, a 3x3 pixel grid appears in the bottom-right corner with grayscale values. This technical indicator helps with:

  • Screen calibration verification
  • Display output confirmation
  • Preventing screen burn-in during error states

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do the dots appear during normal operation? A: No, dots only appear when there's an issue. A properly functioning display shows no status dots.

Q: Can I disable the status dots? A: No, they're a critical diagnostic feature and cannot be disabled.

Q: Why did the dots replace the "Oops" message? A: The dot system provides more specific diagnostic information, helping identify whether issues are server-side, network-related, or content-specific.

Q: Will the dots burn into my screen? A: No, the blinking animation and automatic recovery prevent burn-in. The dots also disappear once issues are resolved.

Q: What if I see different patterns than the three described? A: Only three official patterns exist. If you see something different, it may be content overlapping the indicator area.
